Devil's Luck

An album by Melisa Kelly and the Smokin’ Crows

Album and single cover design, video trailer design.

A red sandstone brick wall with a lit up sign reading Stage Door and an old door which sits slightly ajar and is pitch black inside. On the door is a black and white print of Melisa. A cigarette burns on the pavement

Melisa Kelly and the Smokin’ Crows are a Glasgow based funk and soul band. I produced their album cover, single cover and trailer film for their album Devil’s Luck which launched in August 2018. An LP of the album was produced (design below), as well as a CD and digital release.

Card Back Card Front
Close up of Melisa Kelly's face, a white woman with dark blonde hair looking deeply, with deep red lips, black eyeliner flicking out and thick gold hoop earrings.

For the single cover, we felt it was important to establish Melisa’s image, so we literally used an extreme close up of her face. The same image is painted onto the stage door of a theatre in the album cover, where Melisa has apparently just smoked a cigarette before making her way on stage. The album contemplates ideas of success which made us go for the stage door cover as it represents a liminal threshold between normal life and the stage.

Check out the album on Spotify below - it’s fab! I think my favourite song is Met Your Match or I Never…
